The November Break is not only a great time to relax and catch up on work, but it is also an excellent time to travel. Every year, for the past 35 years, groups of excited Ridley students make the lengthy 700-kilometre trip to New York City and spend the course of their November Break exploring the abundant sounds and sights that the Big Apple has to offer. This year, students experienced the buzzing Times Square, the tranquil Central Park, the bustling Chelsea Market, a lively Broadway play, and more! Below is an interview with April Huang, a Grade 11 student who went on the trip.

As we all know, one major part of travel is the journey there. What is one thing you enjoyed about the bus ride? Did you have any stops along the way? What did you do at the stops?

April Huang: One thing I enjoyed about the bus ride was watching the scenery and also having the time to read my book.

Have you ever been to the United States?

April Huang: I’ve never been to the States, so this was my first time in New York as well as the United States in general.

What Broadway play did you watch? What was your favourite scene/song?

April Huang: We watched ‘& Juliet’. There were a lot of scenes that I liked, but one of my favourites is when Juliet meets Romeo again and they go on this kind of air balloon seat ride. I also enjoyed their dances a lot.

What was your favourite meal over the course of the trip?

April Huang: That’s a difficult question, there weren’t many food options there, but I really liked the ramen, it was really fulfilling.

What is one thing you bought at the Chelsea Market?

April Huang: I bought a big bowl of noodles and also boba!

What did you think about the Brooklyn Bridge Walk?

April Huang: I felt like the scenery was really nice and the weather was great too. There weren’t a lot of people, so the walk was quite enjoyable.

What is one exhibit that caught your eye at the Brooklyn Museum?

April Huang: I would say definitely bring a small bag with you, something that can be zipped up and kept with you safely because there are a lot of people walking around. Especially at Time Square. There are also many scams on the streets, so be careful of where you put your valuables.

April Huang: The dinosaurs. It was in the front, actually. The moment I walked in there were these two giant dinosaurs, and because I used to watch Night at the Museum seeing the dinosaurs made me feel nostalgic.

What are some words you would use to describe Times Square?

April Huang: I think Times Square was very lively and quite crowded.

What are some words of advice you have for people going on this trip next year?

I would say definitely bring a small bag with you, something that can be zipped up and kept with you safely because there are a lot of people walking around. Especially at Times Square. There are also many scams on the streets, so be careful of where you put your valuables.
