A Stack of September Awareness Months

Concussion Awareness Month

A concussion is a brain injury that happens when the brain is jolted or shaken inside the skull; for example, this can be caused by a hit to the head by a ball (Borke). Signs of having a concussion include headaches, sensitivity to light, confusion, dizziness, and balance or memory problems. Concussion Awareness Month is all about raising awareness about concussions and how they happen. If you ever suspect you have a concussion, please go and get tested by a doctor!

Truth & Reconciliation Month

The month of September is Truth and Reconciliation Month in Canada. Truth and Reconciliation Month is all about recognizing and reconciling the history and ongoing impacts of the Residential School System on the Indigenous communities in Canada. In particular, the 30th of September is Orange Shirt Day, which is when you wear an orange shirt to honour the survivors of the residential school system and promote reconciliation.

World’s Alzheimer’s Month

During World Alzheimer’s Month, the goal is to raise awareness about the disease and other forms of dementia. This global campaign aims to promote understanding of the disease, its impact on friends and family, and the importance of early diagnosis and support. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behaviour. It is the most common cause of dementia, which is a general term used to refer to cognitive decline that is severe enough to interfere with daily life (Mayo Clinic). Currently, there are no known cures for Alzheimer’s, although that is being worked on. Even though there might not be a cure yet, there are treatments that can help manage symptoms. If you would like to learn more about Alzheimers, check out the Mayo Clinic or The Alzheimer Sociecty of Canada.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is all about raising awareness about Ovarian Cancer, its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection. The goal of the month is to educate the public, support those who are affected, and promote research into better treatments and prevention strategies. The biggest issue with detecting ovarian cancer is that the main symptoms can point to many other issues; some of these symptoms include abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating, and frequent urination. If you would like to learn more, check out the Mayo Clinic.

Acne Awareness Month

September is acne awareness month, which is a great time to raise awareness about acne and decrease the stigma that comes along with it! Acne is a normal thing, everyone gets it, and it is just a part of being a teenager. Acne can be triggered by hormone changes, stress, and even your diet! But it is also partly genetic.
